The idea of adding colorful LED lights to the pedestrian tunnel behind Grissom High School, a project of South Huntsville Main Business Association, began before the pandemic and is finally complete. A member of Main Street Alabama, South Huntsville Main wanted to create a piece of public art for all Huntsville residents to enjoy and to provide a way for youth to learn about art in the community.
The students in the Art Department at Grissom will have the opportunity to create light art by changing the colors and patterns of the lights in the new Tiger Tunnel. Maggie Jobe, the Art teacher at Grissom High School had this to say about the project: “The Grissom High School Visual Art Department is excited to be partnering with South Huntsville Main Business Association on the new color tunnel public lighting installation. This collaboration allows for art students at GHS to be directly involved in their community as they invest time in their community while expanding their knowledge about public art.”
South Huntsville Main’s Design Committee, which is comprised of South Huntsville business owners and community volunteers, has had this project on its agenda for quite some time. With the recent completion of the Elgie’s Walk Greenway, which is adjacent to the pedestrian tunnel, the time was right for the light installation at the tunnel. Jerry Cargile, Board member for South Huntsville Main Business Association and volunteer for the Design Committee says: “As a longtime resident of South Huntsville and active board member with South Huntsville Main I’m excited to see this project become a reality. We hope the official dedication and lighting of this tunnel will serve as a symbol that we’ve turned the corner to a fresh and new beginning for what has been a very challenging past couple of years. We also hope that through the involvement of the Grissom Visual Arts Department it will be a symbol of encouragement as we look to the future. We expect this is the first of many projects to come as we continue to build on the sense of place for this part of our community that we call home. Go Tigers!”
Dr. Jennie Robinson, City Council Representative District 3, has been a dedicated supporter of South Huntsville Main since the beginning of the organization and she had this to say about the project: “The tunnel running under Haysland Road was designed to safely connect Grissom High School students with greenways and the city park that will be built across the street. Now Grissom students will add their own creative visual connection through color as they light up the tunnel. Grissom High School sits at the heart of South Huntsville’s newest development and the tunnel lighting is the first of many collaborations with surrounding businesses and South Huntsville Main. Partnership makes so much more possible and lighting the tunnel is a symbol of all we can accomplish when we work together.”
South Huntsville Main Business Association’s Tiger Tunnel can be found on Haysland Road behind the North Gate of Grissom High School.
